Frequently Asked Questions about Lessons
How often are lessons held?
Once per week for 30 minutes. A 30-minute lesson usually allows enough time to review repertoire, learn new concepts, and start new pieces. Longer lessons may be available upon request depending on my schedule.
How often and/or how long should students practice for?
Practice is VERY important. It is difficult for a student to make progress without putting in an appropriate amount of practice. As a general rule, I recommend that students practice for 10-15 minutes 5 days per week. This will vary by student as well as age. As a student becomes more advanced their practice time will need to increase.
What happens during a normal weekly lesson?
During weekly lessons we typically will review practiced repertoire first. Sometimes we will refine certain sections, or add on new parts if it is a longer piece. Then, students will work on learning new repertoire and concepts. During this time students will also practice other relevant music skills such as ear training, sight reading, and flashcards. Music theory is always a part of the lesson as well. Most students have a theory workbook that they complete each week, it is important for students not only to play the music but to understand what they are playing.
How much do books cost?
Generally it costs about $20-25 for the first set of method books for a beginning student. These books will need to be refreshed with new material every 6-12 months depending on how quickly the student is moving. An adult student will usually work through a comprehensive book that costs about $15-20, with supplemental material added on when needed.
Is there a recital?
Yes, beginning this year I will be planning an annual recital where students will gain valuable performance experience. The recital is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommeded that all students participate.
